Alexander Gass

2021 Summer Intern and B.Sc. student at McGill University

Alexander is an undergraduate student at McGill, and will receive his bachelor’s degree in physics and computer science in the spring of 2021. In his final year, he worked with Lisa Dang and Taylor Bell on testing the new open source data extraction pipeline, Spitzer Phase Curve Analysis (SPCA), under the supervision of Dr. Nicolas Cowan. He used SPCA to properly treat Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the super-Earth lava planet 55 Cancri-e to obtain phase curves for the planet, with the goal of using these phase curves to obtain robust estimates of its dayside and nightside temperatures. Alexander will be continuing this work at iREx, and hopes to compare the inferred dayside and nightside temperature properties with different atmospheric scenarios.
