The mission of our Institute is not only of a scientific nature, but also of a human nature. Current events related to police brutality and systemic racism taking place in the United States, Canada and elsewhere in the world remind us that many inequities still remain in our society.
The fields of astronomy and space exploration have made great strides thanks to the contributions of black scientists, engineers and technicians, despite the fact that these fields remain less easily accessible to them. As a scientific institute and outreach centre, we have a duty to explore the avenues that will enable us to contribute to the elimination of racial barriers in our field and to amplify the voices of black scientists.
We stand in solidarity with our black colleagues and wish to express our support to the black communities who are bearing the brunt of this crisis. We hear your calls for change and for action, and we are committed to educating ourselves and learning to be better allies.
We stand with you today because Black Lives Matter.
