The Webb Telescope is the most complex observatory ever sent into space… and Canada played an important role in its design!
Join us for a special edition of our Grandes conférences de l’iREx on November 17, 2021 at 7:30PM to learn about this amazing instrument, its design, and the discoveries that Canadian researchers expect to make with it. The lecture will be presented in French by the Principal Investigator of the Canadian NIRISS instrument on the Webb telescope, who is also our Director, Professor René Doyon.
When it will be launched in 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope, successor to the renowned Hubble Space Telescope, will be the largest telescope ever deployed in space. Webb promises to revolutionize our understanding of the Universe, with unprecedented observing capabilities that will allow us to study, for example, the first population of young galaxies formed at the beginning of the Universe, or to probe the atmosphere of temperate exoplanets the size of the Earth that may have conditions suitable for life. Canada is a key partner in the development of this scientific infrastructure, which is arguably one of the most complex machines ever built by humanity.
Our speaker, René Doyon, is a tenured professor in the Department of Physics at the Université de Montréal and the principal investigator of the Canadian NIRISS instrument on the Webb Telescope.
Several researchers who will receive data during the first year of the telescope will also be present to answer your questions!
